Maimonides Medical Aphorisms: Treatises 1-5
"Medical Aphorisms is the best known and most comprehensive of Maimonides' medical works, and Gerrit Bos offers here a masterful English translation with detailed annotations. It consists of approximately 1,500 maxims compiled by Maimonides from the treatises of Galen. Maimonides arranges the aphorisms into twenty-five treatises, organizing them by traditional medieval subspecialties such as gynecology, hygiene, and diet. He also includes a section examining unusual cases from Galen and offers a critical analysis of Galen's theories.

From these it appears that Hippocrates had some notion of the human frame. The oldest anatomical treatise extant is an Egyptian papyrus probably written sixteen centuries before our era. In this new translation, Jonathan McVity master-fully renders Kraus's multilayered meanings, preserving the clever wordplay of the human frame. This book brings together the most diverse figures--the classic aphorists, like La Rochefoucauld; the philosophers, from the Greeks to Samuel Johnson to Virginia Woolf--as well as statesman, scientists, boulevardiers, Olympians, and gadflies.
